Part 6. Shooter

Harris County Sheriff District 5 is no longer launching boats, we are now running on our own with no municipal services. Port A is getting hit hard now, focus is shifting to there. Ark 52: Dash 1, 2 and 3 at the Addicks Reservoir.

Daniel: Imminent danger rescues are significantly coming down in numbers in Houston, if you have a boat and were trying to come here, you may want to consider heading to Port Arthur/Beaumont area. They are now under the gun.

FB Comment by Mike Mezeul: Are you seeing a lot of abandoned animals? Thinking about coming down to help with that issue.

Daniel: Yes, that’s a big issue, they’ve been of low concern vs human life overall and we’ve seen stranded horses, dogs, cats, rescues inundated etc. There is an effort to take them and house them but they need kennel and food donations.

Daniel: You’re also the first person I’ve heard wanting to come down specifically for that so you may be able to get momentum there for such a movement.

Daniel: We are okay, we were not in a gunfight and we did not flip.

FB Comment by Wayne Williams: Evidently they moved to a new area for search and rescue. When they got there, there were a whole bunch of cops. Someone reported that a boat had been shot at (not theirs). Another report said a rescue boat had capsized and the people in it had been sucked under a bridge. Again, not them. Last report was that they had not unloaded their boats at the new location.

We are all okay and off the water, BUT Ark 52s last and final mission ended with a bang! We had just stopped to grab a quick bite to eat before hitting the last area we were searching for the day (and to wrap up this whole trip) when Jawnee and I heard a succession of gunfire as a couple of police cars came screaming through running code. We moved off to our next location and when we got there everyone was pulling weapons out.

Fire Fighter: Are y’all armed? Preferably rifles?

Us: We brought some and we can be!

Fire Fighter: We aren’t letting anyone go out right now, someone is shooting at people from a boat, the constables need to go out to investigate and we need your three airboats to take them.

Us: Yup, were ready!

So we break the rifles out, get them loaded as nine heavily armed constables roll up. We convoyed out and spent an hour patrolling a flooded neighborhood looking for a couple assholes shooting at people. Unfortunately, we could not locate the shooter. I didn’t want to post it at the time as to not worry anyone, plus all of our situational awareness needed to be extremely high, but we are fine and I find it kind of funny that Ark 52s last mission went from “search and rescue” to “fully armed urban patrol via airboat for active shooter.”

Part 7. Senator Cruz

You guys didn’t think the story was over, did you?

So we get done patrolling for the active shooter, checked through a neighborhood, talked to some folks who had seen them walking through, then we head back to the take out to load the boats up. When we got back, there were a lot more people, law enforcement and a news crew. Nothing out of the ordinary, news crews and such were pretty common throughout this whole evolution. We didn’t really pay them any mind, we were tired, it was way later than intended and we had a six hour drive home. We loaded all the boats and I look over, still fully armed with an AR and side arm on my hip, and there’s Senator Ted Cruz, 10 feet away being interviewed by the news crew.

They wrapped up the interview and a gaggle of people surrounded him trying to get a picture and talk. I walked to the front past everyone (maybe the AR helped) and said, “Hey Senator, we were commissioned by the constables to look for a shooter, that’s why I’m armed, but we are from Fort Worth and we’ve been working here since Sunday, we are really tired and want to get going, can we get a picture with you in front of the air boat?”

He shook my hand, said thank you for everything we were doing, and immediately obliged….

We are now on our way home, and there is just so much to think about on what’s transpired in the last four days. Sunday feels like it was two weeks ago. I’m going to put out a couple more posts articulating my thoughts and will push out some other videos and photos that I haven’t posted as I get to them. It’s really all just overwhelming, thought provoking, emotional and awe inspiring. I saw the absolute best in people, and the level of good people and deeds GREATLY outnumbered the bad. No comparison. It wasn’t even close. I don’t know where I saw it but this about sums up my thoughts on the matter: “What happened in Charlottesville is not America, what’s happening in Houston, now that’s America.”

You’re damn right it is. ARK FIVE TWO, out.
