Most of the planning for our ill-fated Pecos trip took place in one long Facebook private message thread that we dubbed “Pecos Paddlers.” Dan, Scott, Ryan and I exchanged over two thousand messages in the months leading up to the trip. We put in on the river on June 17, 2014 and the trip ended four days later, on June 20, when we were forced off the river by a 30-year flood that robbed us of our kayaks, camping gear and cameras, among other things. Needless to say, the flood took the wind out of our sails and I was reminded of just how much when Scott shared a screenshot of the last few messages in the Pecos Paddlers thread before putting in, and the first few messages after the flood. The difference in the tone of the messages before and after is telling. I can’t speak for the others, but the flood really screwed with my mind for months afterwards. The four of us can look back now and laugh at our misfortune, but we weren’t laughing much on the night of June 20th.
